Springfield Armory is the oldest manufacturer of firearms in the United States dating back to 1774 with the Trapdoor easily being one of America's favorite military, collectible rifles. This Springfield Armory Trapdoor, model 1884, caliber .45/70, is in overall excellent condition. The bluing of this rifle is at 100% with the exception of a very small area of fading near the opeing of the muzzle. The bore of the barrel seems to be in good condition, though some minor pitting is visible and the rifling is somewhat worn. The Buffington Rear Sight moves nicely and easily. The original cleaning rod is included with this rifle and is also in excellent condition. The stock is beautiful and smooth though there are some dings throughout, one small chip near the trigger guard and a tiny crack near the receiver (see photos). The walnut is a nice, dark color throughout. The proof mark on the stock is barely visible near the left side of the receiver (view photo). Pitting is cleary visible on the butt plate. The hammer pulls back nicely, the trapdoor opens easily and the trigger pull is somewhat light. The serial number appears to have had three numbers intentionally scratched out (see photo). The numbers 3xxx77 are visible. This rifle would be an excellent addition to any firearm or U.S. military collection for display.
